The Backpack API is implemented as vanilla XML over HTTP. It does require that you send an additional header, which will identify the format of the data being sent. That header is X-POST_DATA_FORMAT which should be set to “xml”.

Image-buttons displaying text can be replaced by text-only links. For these buttons are formated as inlines, they can be placed within the text, as well as treated as text — you can put them into lists, justify them (center, right), float them etc.
