“It’s not a crime to be smarter than your parents.” That’s the motto of Bennett Haselton, a 21-year-old former Microsoft programmer who’s fighting to keep the Net open and uncensored for everyone under the age of 18. For the past three years, Haselton has been running Peacefire, a grassroots online group that tracks and, more importantly, hacks Internet-filtering programs such as Cyber Patrol and CYBERsitter. “Whenever you have politicians or blocking-software companies promoting the point of view that four-letter words or bare breasts are dangerous to people under 18,” Haselton says, “the end result will be more censorship for everybody, including adults.”
