A rebuttal to Meyer’s “The Ethics of Free Software”

“Not too many people today can code. However, if the Internet is as fundamental a change in our society today as the Industrial Revolution was more than a century earlier, practically everyone will eventually have to learn. Not everyone will become a software architect in the future, of course, just as a very small number of people write novels today (and fewer write _good_ novels). However, nearly everyone writes letters to loved ones, jots down the occasional grocery list, letters to the editor or local politicians… and so it will be with programming. Now we begin to see why source code is a form of popular power and freedom in the very real world.”

Fragments (of Time)

“Many large Internet corporations, such as Icon, Medialab, Razorfish and others, aredespite all wise words that have been spoken about the new economytrapped in negatively conservative ‘factory’ -thinking.

Instead of creating strong networks, consisting of small, creative and talented ITcompanies, the smaller companies are being merged into the larger ones, becoming tiny parts of a huge organizational structure.”

Open Source and Business: where

Open Source and Business: where do you draw the line?
Some good questions in one of the comments:

  • Can you grow a business at a slow rate or not at all?
  • Can you shrink a business without it being a failure?
  • Can you take a slow-growth company public?
  • Would Share Holders be willing to sit still for a company that made only a small profit?
  • Would Share Holders stand for a company that deliberately didn’t maximize profit due to an ideal (like open source)?
