First Major Game to be Mac OS X only

The Omni Group: Game Ports: Giants: Citizen Kabuto

Release Notes

  • This is the only version of Giants that can use multiple processors. We actually added multi-processing support while we were doing the port, as well as doing various optimizations on the graphics routines (and changing the graphics library from Direct3D to OpenGL). The end result is we’re getting the same framerates on our Macintosh dual 500 MHz G4s with a GeForce 2 on an AGP 2x bus as we do on a brand-new, top of the line Wintel AMD 1.3 GHz Ahtlon with a GeForce 3 on an AGP 4x bus and DDR RAM.
  • This is the first major game to be Mac OS X only. There are no plans to do a Mac OS 9 version of Giants.

Mac, Gentlemen’s Computer

Apple: The Comeback Kid?

… I could start using the Macintosh as my one computer without even telling the IT department. The techies might notice that the computer on my desk looks a little different from the others. So I’ll have to figure out how to disguise it, kind of like the guy in the back of the classroom who figured out how to stuff Playboy inside his geography textbook.

Comando vs. Corporation

The Commando Returns, lots of good observations but the ending is the best.

It is also crucial that you give programmers ownership of the pieces on which they are working. Only with ownership will they invest more of themselves and their passion into the project. With this investment, they will do a better job and put in more time to make what they own a success.

After the quality of the programmers themselves, the work environment remains the second most critical factor in productivity. Open work areas and cubicles have been proven time and again to be penny-wise and pound-foolish, lowering rent but also lowering productivity. Closing off windows, requiring set hours, enforcing a dress code, and supporting other stupid human resource edicts can also contribute to lower productivity.

Larry concluded our original debate with a very good comment. He said that having a group of smart programmers who were passionate about their work was the most important part of the process. The other partsthe technical and management structuresjust helped a good group be more successful. I agree!
