While watching Tilda this morning I put Star Wars on in the background. First time it played in Tilda's presence. So far we are only to the cantina scene, but there have been three stand out reactions. The first was when Ben is reviving Luke, R2 and 3PO after the Sand People attacked. When 3PO is helped up all covered in sand and an arm ripped off Tilda began laughing and continued for several minutes. The second was when Ben is telling Luke about his father giving Luke the lightsaber. As soon as the lightsaber is turned on Tilda snapped to watching the TV as long as the lightsaber was on, totally mesmerized. The thrid reaction is whenever an Imperial score played she is immediately attracted to the TV. Even when in the other room she runs in to see what is going on.

Monday evening Alice took Orson to the vet, he had fluid around his lungs and was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. He came home with some medicine but was having labored breathing and barely able to walk around. By Tuesday evening around our bedtime he started moaning meowing and was panting like he ran a marathon. Alice took him to the cat ER where he passed away. Orson was a 13 year old Persian and has been with Alice since 1998 in Chicago, Seoul Korea and Lexington, KY with Tilda and I.
Probably my favorite American painting. Might be the reason I have a fasination with dinner/lunch counter/greasy spoons.
I have heard of this truly wonderful thing called "Frequent Flyer Miles" and the associated benefits. But have come to hold the belief that Delta considers me to be some third world pigmy not worthy of such benefits.
It all starts back in 1997. That was the year I got to visit London England with the family. Given we lived in the Greater Cincinnati Area Delta was the only realist flying option. International flight equals lots of miles so I signed up for the Frequent Flyer/SkyMiles, they seemed to be in the middle of changing the name back them.
Few years later in the spring of 2000 I'm flying from Seattle to Cincinnati after riding cross country with Delmar. So I choose Delta, use my SkyMiles card to get more of those great miles.
Skip ahead to last summer. Work is flying me to Greece, lots of miles! Maybe combined with my London and cross country fights I might have something worth using. When I get to the airport with my SkyMiles card they tell me they can't give me the miles for some unknown reason. Just keep my ticket stubs and deal with it after my trip.
When I returned to the States I tried through there website to check the account. There it says to call a different number than the normal one and only during normal business hours. After several attempts spend a hour on hold I give up.
Which brings me to now, today. In May there is an Alaskan cruise with the family. The flight is booked through the cruise company but for a nominal fee of $50 you can pick the airline. Time to get that SkyMiles account working.
Back to the website which has been totally revamped. Still can't use the account but just call this number. After trying several different ways through the automated system, none of which mention anything about getting a new pin, I get someone in India. After 30 minutes of trying to find the complete address they have for me, one of the 6 I have had in the past 8 years, he tells me he can't give me a pin and I can't use any of my old ticket stubs. Apparently they are only good for 6 months, first time anyone from Delta mentioned that. If I want to waste my time I could mail my complaint and maybe they will accept my Greece miles.Delta Airlines Incorporated

But the guy from India seems like he is almost laughing at the idea of that getting me anywhere. Then he transfers me back into the same phone queue I spent an hour waiting in!
This time I get a woman in the south. After we go through the same routine she gives me a fax number, 404-773-1945, to handle things out of procedure. Says the fax folks are way behind and she doesn't know how long it will take but at least weeks. So I finally thinking of asking if they have any of my previous miles, nope. Seems that they expire miles after 3 years. Great, so all this effort and there is nothing there! Now I have never heard of this automatic expiration. She says it is on there website, but I couldn't find it following the directions. Actually can't really find anything useful on there website. /
Now should I even bother? I can maybe in weeks get my Greece miles, though both the Delta reps got as close to saying "not a chance in hell" as they could without saying it. I could just setup a new SkyMiles account for the Alaska miles, but if previous experience is any indication I will not be able to access them until after they expire them.
Kinda makes glad when I hear Delta bankruptcy news, though the government will bail them out.
I am reminded of why I once wanted to become a priest but didn't.
4 years ago at 7 AM PST I smoked my last cigarette. The next 24 hours was the most dificult day of my life.
Occasionally cravings for a smoke hit, but only for a few seconds.
Now I love living in a town that has gone smoke free in all resturants and bars.
By now my body should have reversed, as much as posible, the damage 8 years of smoking did to my body.
Last night was my first Wheelthrowing class at Kentucky Mudworks. Wheelthrowing is spinning clay on a wheel, hopefully turning it into something desired.
It was me and 9 women, counting the instructors. Strangely it all seemed to come kinda natural to me but the women taking the class for the first time were having lots of trouble. I did have a problem on my first bowl. At first when getting it all centered the wheel has to spin pretty fast. When doing the shaping the speed needs to be dropped or eventually as the sides of the bowl get higher it can spin out of shape. Damm that centrifical force!
It was lots of fun. There is something rather relaxing about playing in mud and making something with your hands. Looking forward to the next 5 weeks of classes.
Finally got around to doing the photo merge from the Acropolis Amapatheater. Next time I will have to take more pics with more overlap.
Update: I used Adobe Photoshop Elements 2 to stich up the pics.
Oh, my emotional state, sadness, depression, anger, disalusionment. My faith in the eternal goodness of man, that we are really great, is faltering. Seeing the popular vote leads me to one of two conclusions. The majority of voting Americans have either been dupped beyond there intelect or are comprised of some of the worst of humanity disguised in smiles. I am not sure which is worse. And I don't know which I fear worst or what I can do to change either.
Excuse me while I cry...

Currently What Should I Do With My Life? by Po Bronson all from the Fast Company article. Currently the
Every industry has a culture. has really struck my relationship with the tech industry. The idea being, either one works in a culture with a value system close to their own or one should chose the culture with a value system they wish to aquire.
Before the first computer job there were some differences. Maybe some of the readers from back then can attest. But the real question is are the values then more "me" the ones now or something all together different?
Definately something to think about during the drive to Nashville tomorrow.
First off not a President Bush fan here. I used to joke that I "fled" to Canada in protest ot Georgr Bush winning the election. At various times in my life I have been both prowd and disgusted by my country and the actions the government and citizens.
Now you know part of where I am comming from.
Just yesterday one of the bits on ABC, I think, was interviewing an engineer who studied in New England for 4 years and was fron and currently lived in Saudi Arabia if membor serves me correctly. He had an english speakin wife and 2 kids, his daughter liked playing games on the computer and chatting online.
Now enter the confusion.
The above mentioned engineer expressed a desire to become a mytar in fighting the United States.
He has definately recieved a benefit from the country he was educated and lived in, yet wishes to help in destorying the benefits.
Somewhere along the way we, the United States, went from an idea that was idolized a place for higher learning desired by many of the world, to a place deserving anomosity and a place many desire to bring destruction and ruin apon.
It has to be something more than the actions of President Bush and his adminstration, remember the WTO riots in Seattle and Italy?
So what went so wrong? Why are many on the world siding along with Sadam Husean against George Bush?
Maybe I am niave but please I wish understanding.
- Do you like talking on the phone? Why or why not? Don't like talking on the phone. There is something missing without seeig the person one is talking with. I have heard that 70% of communication is actually visual.
- Who is the last person you talked to on the phone? Brian with Rise Consulting. A monitor go tie die and needed warrenty information.
- About how many telephones do you have at home? 2
- Have you encountered anyone who has really bad phone manners? What happened? Yes, every telemarketer. I hand up.
- Would you rather pick up the phone and call someone or write them an e-mail or a letter? Why or why not? It all depends on the person.
Happiness levels tend to bottom out around 30. Eventually, after 5 or 10 years, you come to terms with yourself. You learn to control your aspirations. After you've done that, it's easier to get steadily happier again." How To Lead a Rich LifeNow add to that the Merilus tanking and being unemployeed
when a man loses his job, it costs him $60,000 in happiness units beyond his missing salary.and my feeling of things really changing at 30 makes some
being married contributes the same amount of happiness to your household as an extra $100,000 in annual income.
So the big question is does engel feel happier and richer after the wedding?
or how Macaronie's learned to hate Craig and Brian.
As I last left you from the Boone County Public Library there was no power to my apartment, no power to either work offices and I was staying at the parents in Florence.
Thursday morning I called into the office, expecting to get voice mail that we were still closed due to power outage, but actually get a voice. Turns out that power was restored to the main office, house in the middle of no where Woodford County, so I rush back to Versailles for a day of meetings and fixing all the boxes and net connections fried with all the power problems.
After a busy day I was hoping for a little power at my apartment. The hope grew the closer I got to home, more and more of the places had power. Even more luck lights on at the apartment buildings!!! But wait, no lights on at my building? Seems that someone in their infinate wisdom thought that each building in the apartment complex should be on a different power zone. So no power for me, apartment temp 35 with outside temp 40.
As luck would have it Craig also still without power. We decided to comeserate over a dinner and warmth of Macaronie's and stayed til almost midnight. Sorry to the lone manager who kept the place open for us but dammit it was cold at the apartment.
Today things were a little worse at work. Seems that the T1 hooked up just before the ice storm was dieing a slow death and AllTell has declared an "Emergency Status" so all that extra money we pay to be up in an hour does us no good and it will be another week before they will get to us.
So that is all for now, hopefully there is power in the apartment else it is back to the parents til monday.
Or how I relearned a love for analog and remembered winters at the slum.
Saturday/Sunday 3:30 AM power goes off.
Sunday morning, still no power which means no heat. Apartment temprature 60.
Sunday night, apartment temp 50.
Monday morning, apartment temp 45.
Tuesday morning, fozbaca depates to Florence and the warmth of the parents house.
Current eta on power returning to apartment, weedendish.
Current eta on power to either of the KER, where I work, offices, maybe next week.
That is all for now, using the Boone County Public Library's computers for net access and they time out is ticking.
