A 8 year journey was ended this morning. I finished listening to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows. I'll stay away from saying anything specific. There were too many moments to count where I found a tears in my eyes and the moments increased in frequency the closer to the end I ventures. The Deathly Hollows gets a solid 2 thumbs up and was a great end to a great series. If you have finished the book and want to talk specifics with me, "release the hounds!"

Da Vinci Code, The Movie

Da Vinci Code was well kinda boring. Seems that in there attempt to not piss anyone off they turned it into a pretty mediocre made for TV movie. What a shame. The book was a good read and had some intresting things to say between the pseudo history.

War of the Worlds

War of the Worlds
Someone owes me $7 and 2 hours of my life. Went to see the Spielberg rendition of War of the Worlds last evening. There are some stunning visuals, unfortunately one of those great death ray effects don't cross the path of the main characters. Never, not once, in the entire movie did I care what would happen to them, other than there death which was not about to happen.

In the words of Comic Book Guy, "Worst Movie Ever!"

Way to go John Stewart

Oh the irony. John Stewart Bitchslaps Crossfire and ther retort, saying he softballed John Kerry. So now even the journalists are treating The Daily Show as a serious source of news. Do yourself a favor and get the show by BitTorrent or read the transcript.

On a related note I picked up America (The Book) which is turning into a real work of art. Totally styled like a school text book but probably more informative. And there is a forward from Thomas Jefferson,

P.S. Oh, and is it true Halle Berry is once again single? If so, I'd be forever in your debt if you would put in a good word for T.J. Oh how I loves the mochachina.

Oh, the humor and education in just a P.S.

Sex and Lucia

SexAndLucia.jpg Sex and Lucia is one of the most beautiful movies I have seen this year. The scenes were almost over powering at times. The locations in Marid and Formentera, Balearic Islands make me want to move. Other than the a short bit in the beginning I forgot about the subtitles, at times they were not needed to tell the story. Similar to Memento and Pulp Fiction the chronology is morphed to good affect. As an added bonous Paz Vega as Lucia is a refreshingly non Hollywood image of beauty, no implants, no bleach.

The Matrix Revolution

I saw it. Didn't want anything spoiled, and to not spoil it for you select if you want to read furtuer.

It sucked, dammit. I was really hoping that Reloaded would all of sudden stop sucking after Revolution but nah. Oh well maybe the dream trilogy was something that just shouldn't have happened. Flame on in the comments.

An abriged script for Revolutions. Sums up lots of the stupidity that was Revolutions. And is a much more intresting version :)

Also, there were two very cool trailers before Revolutions. The first was for Troy, the big budget Illiad. The second trailer was The Day After Tomorrow which looked like some post-apocalypse the would is flooded and frozen over.

SimCity 4

I have been a SimCity fan since the playing the first verison on a 286. Absolutely loved the game. Even went so far as to play hookie from life for week playing SimCity2k. Ever since the release of SimCity4 I have been waiting. Waiting for a demo just in case but finally I broke down and made the purchase. I have to give Maxix/EA a thumbs up on the out of the box. The tutorial was great, quick to the point and picked with a real game play at the end. The visuals were stunning. All in all it should have made for a great game. See the should? For some reason it was just absolutely no fun to play. Maybe the series has been played to death. Maybe they just didn't really add anything imediately new and captivating. Regardless 0 fun factor.

So while on almost every level I would give it a thumbs up it gets a "sucked" and deleted from the harddrive.

X-Men 2

Just got back from my first viewing of X-Men 2. On a scale of 1 to 10 it totally kicked ass! I am shocked that there is not really anything to bitch about, other than there is not a sequel comming out in November. That is all for now, don't want to ruin it for anyone else who has not had the pleasure.

Ebert Reviews The Matrix Reloaded

"The Matrix Reloaded," which plays like a collaboration involving a geek, a comic book and the smartest kid in Philosophy 101.

He gives it 3.5 stars, and there are some spoiler potential so be warned.

Revolution OS Mini Review

Finished my first NetFlix, Revolution OS. All in all a good job covering some of the history and personalities around the whole Free Software, GNU, Open Source, etc. There was really only one new piece of information for myself, damm the personalites sure are dorks of the highest degree. I kinda expected it but they sure have done wonders with improving my preception of my own social skills.

Good to rent for the geeks or as an explaination for it all.

Phone Booth, mini review

Went to see Phone Booth over the weekend. Overall I would give it a thumbs up when matinee priced. The movie does the all in realtime like the tv series 24, which helps to keep the intensity up. Colin Farrell did a good job of taking the audience through Stu's emotions. Phone Booth left me with the impression that it was a movie made for alpha males, staring alpha males, styled for alpha males with message targeted for alpha males.

BTW, the female watching Phone Booth withme didn't find it a successful movie, so your millage may vary.

Catch Me If You Can

Saw Catch Me If You Can today. I'm usually one to like Tom Hanks movies and this one was no different even if the character was a bit of an odball, the FBI agent tracking down Frank. Now with Dicrapo I'm usually on the thumbs down side, his characters usually are the weakest points of his movies, but Catch Me was an exception. Maybe Frank, the kid who inpersonated pilots, doctors and lawyers in a massive check fraud scheme, was really just very much DiCapro playing himself. All in all it was an enjoyable flick. I would give it a thumbs up for a matinee.

Almost Perfect, the Book

The book, Almost Perfect, was originally published by Prima Publishing in 1994. It is the story of the rise and fall of WordPerfect Corporation from my point of view.
It is already providing facinating reading. Hearing about the recession of the early 80's and comparing it to the current one is rather theraputic.
Although I did not know it at the time, that $5 an hour part-time job would turn into a great opportunity. Somehow I had arrived at exactly the right place at exactly the right time. ... Like some rare astrological phenomenon when all the planets are perfectly aligned, all the necessary events came together at just the right time, and a new and soon to be successful company was born.
It amazes me how much computers have changed in 20 years and how little the whole buisness aspect of computers and software has changed in 20 years.

Longhorn, the next Windows, Screenshots

Finally had the patience to wait for the New Longhorn Screenshots that have been getting lots of mentioning on the web. In general the theme looks better than what XP has to offer, like the rounding of windows kinda like the default for RedHat 8.0. The new bar, other than the task bar, looks like a nice version of what unix desktops have been doing for years. I still don't like the way they are using the Start Button and all the ectra crap in file windows seems a waste. Actually if the extra crap in file windows was moved into some fixed point in say the new bar the usability might improve. Ironicly it looks like a cleaned up version of a unix desktop, and not all that OS X influenced like some are saying. All in all the screenshots give some of the less creative theme designers something to copy for the time being.
